London, home to about 8.8 million people, is the capital and biggest city of both England and the United Kingdom. At the head of an estuary that stretches 50 miles (80 km) down to the North Sea, it is situated on the River Thames in southeast England. For almost two millennia, it has been a significant settlement. Roman Londinium laid the foundation for the City of London, which still has its medieval borders and serves as the city's financial and ancient core.

Being a major global city, London has a significant impact on media, science and technology, tourism, transportation, communications, education, fashion, entertainment, and finance. It is the largest urban economy in Europe and one of the world's principal financial hubs, with a GDP of €801.66 billion in 2017.

With more than 300 languages spoken there, London is a multicultural city. Greater London is home to slightly under 10 million people, making it the third most populous city in Europe as of 2023. This represents more than 16% of the population of England and 13.4% of the United Kingdom. The Greater London Built-up Area, with 9.8 million people living there as of the 2011 census, is the fourth most populous region in all of Europe.
